In 1910, Thomas A. Edison, inventor extraordinaire, demonstrated a new technique for synchronizing moving pictures and phonographs using a "kinetophone." The article describes the system as "A phonograph...located behind the screen..." connected to "the moving picture machine" and "controlled by a pulley which runs across the ceiling."
